Discover one of the best-kept secrets on the Grand Strand with an enjoyable but challenging round of golf at Prestwick Country Club.
Located on the South Strand between Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach, this semi-private establishment offers 18 outstanding holes in setting that is worth visiting regardless of your golf game. The prestigious Prestwick layout presents players of all handicaps with a stiff test of skill and great escape to a beautiful oasis.
Designed by the architect team of Pete and P.B. Dye, Prestwick was carved from a Lowcountry terrain that features dense pine and hardwood forests and pristine wetlands of creeks and lakes. The course was included in Golf Digest's "Best-Kept Secrets" list in 2004, and now the word has gotten out about what a great layout it is.
Measuring at just shy of 7,100 yards from the championship tees, this par 72 requires some serious distance with the driver. However, Prestwick offers five sets of tees to provide a fairer driving length for lighter hitters. Besides, it's how well you swing the rest of the clubs in your bag that will determine your fate at Prestwick.
Prestwick wastes little time putting golfers to the test thanks to one of the toughest five-hole starting stretches on the Strand. The rest of the round serves up some tempting risk/reward opportunities, and the wide, lush fairways and new and true Bermuda greens create a difficult but playable course for all skill levels.
Avoiding the water, woods and bunkers that are strategically placed throughout the course, golfers must continuously weigh their options. The 531-yard, par-5 17th ranks as the most difficult, but presents golfers who go for it and win with par and birdie opportunities, and the 18th hole finishes over a lake beside the stately and charming clubhouse.
The clubhouse is home to the popular Grill Room, a semi-formal and casual restaurant that offers everything from dinner and appetizers to sandwiches and wraps. The bar area serves as the 19th hole and overlooks the lake that rests between the ninth and 18 holes. The outdoor patio deck is the perfect place to relax and relive your round.
The clubhouse also holds a fully stocked pro shop with all the gear you need to tee off, along with the first-class instruction you need for the rest of your shots. Pro lessons are available and golfers can work on their swings on the lighted driving range and practice putting and chipping greens located on the grounds. The Prestwick also offers tennis courts and a swimming pool for those looking to make a full day of it.
Prestwick Country Club is located at 1001 Links Road in Myrtle Beach, which is close to the seaside town of Surfside Beach.
